Happy Presidents' Day from all of us at NationsClassroom. While Presidents' Day is observed nationwide, the Presidents' Day celebrations in the Washington, D.C. area are hard to beat. If you're in Washington, D.C. today, here are three celebrations not to miss.
1. George Washington's Mount Vernon: Visitors can enjoy a day-long celebration in honor of Washington's 288th birthday, including a meet-and-greet with General Washington, a viewing of George Washington's favorite play "Cato", a performance by the United States Air Force Strings, and even a slice of birthday cake. And the best part? Admission to Mount Vernon on Presidents Day is free.
2. George Washington Birthday Parade in Alexandria: The nation’s largest George Washington Birthday Parade marches a one-mile route through the streets of Old Town Alexandria. The Parade begins at 1pm ET. The historic neighborhood backdrop only adds to the charm of the parade.
3. Smithsonian National Museum of American History: The Museum of American History's popular exhibit "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden" explores the lives and contributions of the 45 men who have led the nation since its founding. Artifacts include the carriage ridden by President Grant during his inaugaration, President Roosevelt's microphone from his fireside chats, and more than 900 other unique artifacts.
