Exciting news for any winter-loving visitors traveling through the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. On November 30, the new TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport is adding a 56’x44’ ice skating rink, dubbed “The Runway Rink.”
“Normally, when you hear about ice at the airport, it’s not good news,” says Tyler Morse, CEO and Managing Partner of MCR/MORSE Development, the owner-operator of the TWA Hotel. “But in this case, people can get excited about a frozen tarmac at JFK — we’re creating the Rockefeller Center of Queens.”
The TWA Hotel opened just last May in the old Trans World Airlines terminal at JFK that dates back to 1962 and is an iconic landmark.
“The building was closed in 2001 and empty for 17 years,” explains Tyler Morse, CEO of MCR Development. “When we got there, the windows were falling out and it was full of lead paint, so we spent $65 million to bring it back up to speed. Then, we began to scour for all of the period-appropriate items for the interior."
The hotel has now been revitalized, featuring 512 guest rooms, a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, a rooftop pool, and now an ice-skating rink!
Visitors will have to hit the rink before heading through security at the airport. Admission to the rink will cost $15 for adults, $10 for kids under 12, and you can rent skates for $10 (kids under 12 can rent for $8).
The rink will be open November 30, 2019 - February, 2020.
