Happy (Founding) Father's Day

We at NationsClassroom want to wish all the awesome dads out there a Happy Father's Day! Whether you're a brand-new dad, or all your children are out of the nest, we appreciate you.

 

In honor of Father's Day, we did some research on America's Founding Fathers. Not only were most of these men fathers themselves, they also helped create and support the foundation of our country. Here are a few of our favorite historic sites that honor one (or more) of our Founding Fathers.

Virginia Historic Sites Continue to Reopen

If you've been missing the cobblestone streets and historic ships of the Historic Triangle, you're in luck. Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown have all announced reopening dates after their months of forced closure due to the Covid-19 virus.

Updated TSA Security Measures

After months of shelter-in-place and quarantines, states are finally reopening for travel. For many families, this means that vacations and leisure travel can be rescheduled.

 

As they prepare for the influx of travelers, airports across the United States are preparing new safety and cleanliness standards to keep travelers safe. The TSA plans to roll out their updated security procedures by mid-June. Here's everything travelers will need to know.

Arlington National Cemetery Expansion Approved

The Arlington National Cemetery will be expanding acreage in order to provide more 60,000 more burial plot for U.S. service members.  This expansion will ensure burial space for service members through 2050. Without the expansion, the cemetery is estimated to run out of burial plots in 22 years.

Interior of Mount Vernon to Briefly Close for Maintenance

The interior of the Mount Vernon Mansion will be closed for scheduled annual preservation work from January 27 to February 9, 2020. While no interior tours will be held during those two weeks, the rest of the estate and museum will remain open.  Visitors to Mount Vernon during the restoration will receive 25% off general admission prices.

Baseball Fever! National Mall Renamed 'Nationals Mall' - Temporarily

The National Park Service (NPS) is swept up in baseball fever as the Washington Nationals face the Houston Astros in the 2019 World Series.  In a tweet, the NPS showed their support for the Washington Nationals by temporarily and unofficially "renaming" the National Mall the "Nationals Mall."   They also tweeted out a picture of the mall with the Nationals logo on it (which is not real, much to the chagrin of Nationals fans).  Read on to check out the tweet in today's blog post.
