Free Admission and Special Events at Mount Vernon in Honor of Presidents' Day

Every day is a great day to visit Mount Vernon, the beautiful and historic estate of George and Martha Washington, but on Presidents' Day, guest enjoy free admission and special events.


Events include a wreathlaying at the Washington's Tomb, a military demonstration on the bowling green with costumed characters, a rare tour of Washington's reading room, and an Old Guard gun salute to the first president.

Presidents' Day Signals School Break for Some, Time to Honor Chief Executives

Celebrated on the third Monday of February, Presidents’ Day celebrates the legacies of all U.S. presidents. The holiday was originally established in 1885 to honor President George Washington, which is why it was celebrated on his birthday every year on February 22. That is, until the government decided workers needed more three-day weekends and Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971.
