Traveling to D.C. During the Government Shutdown?  Here's What You Need to Know

WhiteHouseGroupWhat can you expect when traveling to Washington, D.C. during a federal government shutdown?  Rest assured, your itinerary should remain relatively unchanged. In today’s blog, we have the answers to which attractions in D.C. remain open and which attractions are temporarily closed.

Our sources at the District’s official travel service “Destination D.C.” emphatically want you to know that the District is “open for business!”


Below is a list of all of the NationsClassroom D.C. attractions that remain open during the federal government shutdown:

  • Arlington National Cemetery

  • Artechouse

  • Bureau of Engraving and Printing

  • Entertainment Cruises

  • Entertainment and Sports Arena

  • The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

  • Madame Tussauds Washington, D.C.

  • Museum of the Bible

  • National Building Museum

  • Newseum 2National Cathedral

  • National Law Enforcement Museum

  • National Geographic Museum

  • National Museum of Women and the Arts

  • National Theatre

  • Nationals Park

  • Newseum

  • Union Station

  • U.S. Capitol Visitor Center

  • U.S. Botanic Garden

  • U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

Additionally, D.C. government services will continue as normal; this includes sanitation, schools, public transportation (including the Metra), parks and other ancillary government services.

Open-air national parks, such as the National Mall, and its monuments and memorials, remain open and accessible but with some limited access (visitor centers and memorial shops will not be staffed).

So what sites are impacted?  The Smithsonian Institute sites and the National Gallery of Art are closed during the shutdown, due to their affiliation with the federal government.
